Meanings
The meanings keep popping up and jumping into awareness. The line from "Genesis" -- "Into the barrenness the vibrancy and growth of life" -- is reflective of celebration out of chaos. The more I read and re-read it, I am tempted to add, "It's prophetically global."

-- Gilbert E. Fleer, Professor/Counselor, Social Science, Wester Texas College

Powerful use of line, comments on race, folklore
In only two sentences Perry can present a powerful poem like "Translation." A brilliant, enlightening poem is "Must I Be a Race?" I wish my Hispanic, Afro-American, Native American Indian friends could hear or read it. Perry knows folklore in two languages (Spanish or Puertorican and English, and he presents the "folk" and their animals in such philosophical poems and translations as "The Ox."

-- James W. Byrd, Professor Emeritus of Literature and Languages, Texas A&M University- Commerce Emerituds

My favorites
The "Ox" and "Translation" are two of my favorites. "Translation -- When I was thrust into this strange and awesome world,/ I gave myself to What is here." We came into this sometimes baffling world with no volition of our own. We inevitably ask ourselves these questions: Who am I? Where did I come from? What am I here for? There is only one answer: "Trust to Caring Arms." In a few short years we must leave this baffling world behind forever. "What is there" we cannot know. Again our only answer is "Trust in Caring Arms." -- Father Paul W. Barrus, Parochial Vicar, St. Elizabet Ann Seton Church, Plano, Texas

Best thing since sliced bread!Well...for Chemical Engineers'
I am a Junior/Senior in Chemical Engineering, and I can't say enough about this set I recently purchased. My husband is a Graduate student in Chemical Engineering and he told me to hold off, that he never used his copy (1991 version), and never needed it in college. I use the electronic book all the time on my laptop. It's a great resource, and so EASY to use. I even caught my husband using my Perry's on more than one occasion, and he finally admitted my version was much better and easier to use than his! He went out and bought his OWN copy! I pretty much only use the electronic book, but it's nice to know if my laptop crashed, I have a hardcopy to go to. With the active 8, you can get the variables from a z-Compressibility Chart without having to take out the magnifying lens and ruler. Just slide your mouse and a red bordered legend tells you the Tr Pr and z simultaneously until you reach your desired measurements. Printing is a cinch, and it looks like the hardcopy except on 1 page! As I said, I use this book about every day, and I am sure this is what I'll bring to the office when I'm done with school. This would have been sweet during my Material/Energy Balance class as a sophomore, too. If you're a student you already spend $500+ on textbooks a term anyway, you might as well buy a book that has the information of every book you will buy in college in one resource for a little extra money, I put my name on it. You won't regret it if you're serious about your major.

Great Guide
I am a chemical engineering student at Kansas University, where Don Green teaches. I just hope that when I take my econ. class from him next semester, that his class is as easy as this book is easy to use.....a must for students, not only professionals

A must-have reference for all power & process engineers
I used the early editions of Perry before, but this 7th edition is the most comprehensive one ever. All you need from steam tables to equations & formulae are all included in the CD ROM. I recommend it to every professional engineer in power plant and/or process industries. It's a must-have reference.

A Hoot ...
What a hoot! Millard Fillmore gets in more trouble than [anyone]. Don't pass it up! The "Photographer's Scene" is absolute pure genius. Never underestimate the power of constant tumescence. Wish more writers were as "crazy" as this poor 44288 guy was purported to be way back in his time.

Unbuckle Your Belt For This One
Sit back and unbuckle your belt for this one because the old stomach muscles are going to get one helluva work out. Constant Tumescence? You gotta love that euphemism. This 44288 guy rides this little pony to a super wonderful surprise ending. This book's worth it at thrice the price.

Mel Brooks? Izzat you?
The premise of constant tumescence is worthy of a Mel Brooks book and movie and if he's secretly floating this book as an advance script, I'm sorry to out it. But this is wild stuff that gives you whole clusters of great Mel Brooks guffaws that shakes your chucklings all over... only this book takes bites out of the butts of America's obsession and conflicted attitudes toward sex. I still can't get over the "photographer's scene." A riot. It causes me to break out laughing in strange restaurants even now. I hear this 44288 was some Ohio Beautiful Mind type with serious work under his belt in his Some Die Mad quatrain. OK, so add another title. How about comic genius? But I gotta ask: "Izzat you, Mel?"

The greatest criminal book of all times!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi! guys. If you are gonna buy this book, it is the best thing you are going to do. This book is the greatest of all the criminal and courtroom books i have ever read. This book is the perfect example of the ingenuity and imagination of its author, Erle Stanley Gardner. It is due to books like this, that he is listed in the Guiness Book Of World Records as the highest selling author of all times. I personally give this book, the highest rating possible.

"A Cross between a Saint and a Devil"
This is the fourth Perry Mason books written in 1934 and I think it is one of the best. The story was very well plotted; at the beginning a strange and tense relationship between two couples attracted me; and the ending was surprising! And Mason's characteristics, "a cross between a saint and a devil" was written remarkably in this early book.

you never suspected it
a client calls for a will and a howling dog . the next day he runs away with his neighbors wife leaving behind the CORPSE of her husband and perry mason in a very embarrising position.or did he? must read . on of the best gardners book.

Voyeuristic View of an Engineering Manager's World
This book was a great read! It affords the reader a voyeuristic view into the engineering / automotive / upper to middle manager's world. When you read this book, you feel as if you are a fly on the wall. You feel very much a part of the story. And this book makes you think! I very much enjoyed its thought provoking content, its local (Michigan) flavor, and the aforementioned voyeuristic view into the engineering manager world.

Shows how theory fits in the real world.
This story weaves many valuable and far reaching concepts into an entertaining tale of people coping with the need to invent new technology and also live full lives. I recommend this book to anyone who develops new products or wonders how it can be done better.

Entertains as it instructs-Well written for all businesses.
As you are entertained, you find yourself thinking about your own business. The light bulb goes on! Why are we in business? We may all need to be reminded at times.

Cheap Psychological Tricks for Parents
Published in Paperback by Peachtree Publishers (April, 2003)
Authors: Perry W. Buffington and Jen Singh

Dr. Buff does it again!
As a grandmother, watching my children raise families of their own is a wonderful experience. But, as we all know, we need a little help now and then. When I read Cheap Psychological Tricks for Parents by Dr. Perry Buffington I knew help was here! I immediately passed the book along to my daughter and then my daughter-in-law who both have toddlers and school age children.

The book is well-written, easy to read and holds the attention of the reader to the end. As I read the book I was taken back to the time when my children were little (especially in the chapter "Eat Your Veggies"). How many times did I struggle trying to make my kids eat those veggies, and how many times have I watched my kid/parents do the same thing? Well, Dr. Buff
settled that argument - just hide the veggies inside something the kids do like.

Thanks Dr. Buff. Your other books have been great and we'll be looking forward to your next release.

Kids are not small adults!
I bought this book after hearing Dr. Buff on the radio (WDBO-AM). He gives tips (tricks) that are obvious but you'd never think about them until you READ them! So I read the entire book in one weekend and earmarked the tips I wanted to try, one at a time.

For me, the most profound was that kids between 7 and 12 can't understand adult logic, even if you use simple words in their vocabulary. The next trick I tried for one of the kid's birthdays - I saved money, bought fewer gifts, and got THE gift that was really wanted, not just a fad gift. The third trick will start this weekend - getting the kids to eat vegetables!

Almost like having a manual for raising kids! Hospitals should provide this books as part of the New Parents gift bag.

Finally...the manual I've been looking for!
My wife and I always joked about losing the 'manual' on childraising. We have been so pleased with this book! It covers every age (we have a 12 and 6 year old) and it's helped us out of many tight spots. We actually learned a thing or two ourselves.

Cozumel Guide/Map
Published in Map by Treaty Oak (01 January, 2000)
Authors: Perry McFarlin and ITMB
Average review score:

Best map or guide on the market
Excellent coverage of Cozumel. ... Maps are available of Cancun, Cozumel, Riviera Maya, Playa de Carmen, and soon Isla Mujeres and Chichen Itza.

I buy new maps yearly, because the changes year to year are so drastic. Get one or all before you go!

THE Map
This is indeed the only map/guide you need to get the most out of your visit to the magical island of Cozumel. While there are maps of anything you could imagine, there is also plenty of guide-book type commentary to help you find what you're looking for. After several trips, I finally broke down and got the map, and it is invaluable. Anything you need to know about Coz (and more) is on the map, or in the commentary. Plus, it's handy size makes it easy to stuff in your bag, so you're never at a loss as to where to explore next. This is the best money you can spend prior to your vacation to ensure that you get the most out of your time in paradise.

Marvelously detailed map!
I have purchased Perry and Laura's maps several times over the last few years and have never been disappointed. In fact I have been astonished at the amount of detail and the amount of useful information on the map. Not only are the maps amazingly detailed, even down to the shapes of pools, but there are loads of travel tips included and listings of the authors' favorite events, restaurants, etc. This map/travel guide is an invaluable resource!

Beef Cattle Science (7th Edition)

Authors: M. E. Ensminger and R. C. Perry
Average review score:

Yes, friends, Ensminger's books are great sources of info!
Friends have prompted me to review this book.

This is a highly technical gem oriented to the university student. Those of you for whom English is a second language will gain a great deal of referring to your Oxford dictionaries but it will be well worth it if you truly want to understand everything about raising beef cattle.

While your at it, order Stockman's Handbook - somewhat less academic and a bit easier to read. Both books are five star quality!

Is this the beef book for you?
I first learned of this book through Amazon and read the reviews. It is a very technical book but it is very complete.

Excellent - a must fo anyone who raises beef cattle,
A MUST for anyone with 2 head o 50,000 head. Colorado State University textbook. Index is not the best, but it's a MUST HAVE reference bookl.

I also, have his STOCKMAN'S HANDBOOK -- a must for anyone with livestock.

Author just passed away. I was waiting for the 8th Edition.

Some of the infomation is basic, but it IS a big, heavy book.

Chicago Death Trap: The Iroquois Theatre Fire of 1903
Published in Hardcover by Southern Illinois Univ Pr (Txt) (February, 2003)
Authors: Nat Brandt, Cathlyn Schallhorn, and Perry R. Duis
Average review score:

Fire returns to Chicago
Chicago is certainly well known for the fire of 1871 but how many people have ever heard of the fire which swept through the Iroquois Theatre thirty-two years later, leaving six hundred people dead in its wake? I admit that I never had heard about it so with Nat Brandt's excellent new book, "Chicago Death Trap", the lives of those lost and the hundreds of families that the tragedy touched can now be told.

The author is direct and writes in a sparse, conservative tone that works well. Within the covers of this small book, Brandt, after some good preparation about the Iroquois Theatre itself and the men behind it, spells out the details of the fire....how it started, how it spread, how it affected the cast and stagehands, (the performers were giving a presentation of the comedy, "Mr. Bluebeard", starring Eddie Foy, Sr.) and finally how people in a sudden and severe panic tried to saved themselves. This is not an easy book to read but I give the author credit....it is also not an easy book to put down. Brandt gives human faces to those who escaped and those who did not. He tells of incredible rescues and how the city responded moments after the fire started and days and weeks after the finger of blame began to point in all directions. He describes makeshift morgues and those who came to identify loved ones...if they could at all. He recounts the ramifications faced by officials and the theatre owners after the tragedy. The horrors are so individualized...down to the items of clothing and personal items worn by those in the theatre that afternoon.

It is perhaps toward the very end of this book that Nat Brandt makes his most poignant point... that other than a cemetery monument and a City Hall bas-relief nothing else exists in commemoration of the Iroquois fire. The memory of the fire seems to have passed as quickly as the fire itself. Thanks to this book, we have a chance to learn about this horrible day in Chicago's history.

Excellent Book
Thoroughly researched and well written, "Chicago Death Trap" makes for enlightened reading about a tragedy reminiscent of the Titanic. Given that the Iroquois fire happened a hundred years ago, the author provides a surprising amount of detail and factual information.

Owners and managers of buildings open to the public must not be allowed, as they were in 1903, to evade responsibility for fire safety issues.

Will We Never Learn?
I could not put this book down, nor stop crying while I was reading it. Picture it - a beautiful, brand new 'state of the art' theatre, a children's pantomime full of thrilling set pieces, a jam-packed theatre - and all fire and building regulations flouted. The Iroquois disaster has the same hallmarks as the sinking of 'The Titanic'. A fireproof theatre with no exit signs and blind endings, no fire drills carried out, and an unsinkable ship with not enough life boats, no binoculars and panic striken passengers. These were not disasters caused by God, but man's greed and overweening pride. Don't be fooled - as 'Tinder Box' (which I also recommend - they are equally good, in different ways)makes crystal clear, such a theatre/cinema tragedy could happen again, and would probably be worse this time. There are generally fewer staff employed now, and they are equally under-rehearsed in evacuating a building. Please, please, always check where your nearest fire exit is!
